For those who’ve read a lot of the great author’s work it is fabulous, but others may have some difficulty getting into the style and flow. A novel that no one can go wrong by reading, as can be said about everything else that Woolrich wrote.

At his best, his stories are moody, passionate, and mysterious, with fascinating plots and intriguing characters. It certainly veers towards melodrama in some aspects of its scenario and storytelling but I felt that the ending was really effective, packing an emotional punch.

This book has a clever premise, which I won’t give away, but suffers throughout – particularly at the beginning and end – from an overly melodramatic narrative that definitely dulls the fascination of seeing how the sort-of-heroine deals with her unique situation and the threats to the future of her and her child.
