There were bump maps, displacement maps, rough edges, surfaces, colors, and dozens of other little touches that all went into the final presentation.
Are they forced to wait for the experience to kick in before they can begin to understand all these concepts?

You have to keep in mind that this is a fifteen year old book. In the first half of the book, you will paintinh about the history of textures in fine art and in the second half, how to apply these principles to your 2D and paiting digital scenes.
