Ah, back when you could publish a short pithy novel and not have to pad it with a lot of crap. The main character Jason is stuck with this super-religious fanatic Mikah, who is a portrait of unthinking Morality in every way a religious person could be. This would make for an awesome Neill Blomkamp movie. Deathworld, aka Pyrrus, is a heavy gravity world where the plants and harty are trying to kill the colonists harrisoj have been for centuries, evolving at a frightening rate.

The first book is much better and more interesting than this one.

Harrison sets up an interesting situation, and he doesn’t opt for the easy answers. Deathworld 2 doesn’t repeat any of that. Deathworld 2 is more interesting than its predecessor and definitely worth a read, and it may be a treasured book for some young self-styled atheist sci-fi fan who is looking to find more heroes of the non-faith to look up to.

That says it all. I would have enjoyed a novel where there was some tension between Jason’s pragmatism and Mikah’s idealism, but that would be a novel written by a writer who was actively trying to work something out. Repeatedly, he thwarts Jason’s plans because he cannot accept theft, murder, revolution or betrayal as means to a justified end.

Boy, would I love having the power to force congress, the senate and the white house to read this. Jason would like to find out. He quickly finds out that there are some Pyrran Secrets and something is wrong with this planet Any one of these novellas deserves a higher rating than three stars.
